Post-Declination Support Program

This program is designed to provide support to faculty whose research proposals have been declined. The program was initiated with the recognition that securing a major grant is an iterative process in which even competitive proposals often go through several resubmissions before being funded. While the value of persistence in obtaining an external grant is widely recognized by most experienced grant writers, it has been our experience that some faculty, particularly newer faculty, get discouraged when their proposals are declined and simply fail to revise and resubmit. This is unfortunate because major funding agencies report that the probability of getting funded increases with subsequent resubmissions.

The post-declination initiative is an attempt to remedy this problem and to increase the frequency and quality of resubmissions. Accordingly, the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs will take the initiative in directly contacting principal investigators whose proposals have been declined, specifically, new or inexperienced faculty, to offer encouragement and provide support for revising and resubmitting proposals. In addition, any faculty member may participate in this program on request.

Specifically, RSP will offer the following services as part of the Post-Declination Support Program:

  • assist in interpreting panel summaries and ad hoc reviews
  • provide feedback and suggestions for revision
  • meet with faculty to consider strategies for responding to previous reviews
  • offer to review revised proposals
  • provide travel funds to meet with program officers

Please contact Scott Sakaluk (sksakal@ilstu.edu or 438-2528) to participate in this program.
